Welcome to Internal Family Systems Therapy
A Gentle Guide to Understanding Your Inner World
If so, you already understand the core foundation of Internal Family Systems (IFS).
The Core Principle: There Are No Bad Parts
When we struggle with anxiety, self-criticism, reactive defensiveness, overeating, or procrastination, it can feel like these behaviors are actively working against us.
In IFS, we believe that every part of you has a positive intention. Even the parts that cause pain or internal friction are simply trying to protect you from getting hurt. Instead of fighting or suppressing unwanted thoughts and actions, IFS helps us understand, unburden, and heal them.
Meet Your Internal Family
Think of your mind like a household. Inside, there are three main types of protective or wounded Parts, alongside a central, wise inner spirit known as the Self.
β¨ The Self (Your Inner Leader)
The calm, compassionate core of who you are. It is not a partβit is your innate inner wisdom. When you are leading from Self, you naturally experience the 8 Cs:
- Calm
- Curiosity
- Compassion
- Confidence
- Courage
- Clarity
- Connectedness
- Creativity
π‘οΈ Managers
Proactive Protectors: They work day-in and day-out to control your environment and keep you safe so you never feel vulnerable or hurt.
Examples: Perfectionism, inner criticism, people-pleasing, over-planning, high anxiety.
π₯ Firefighters
Reactive Protectors: When painful emotions break through, Firefighters step in aggressively to extinguish the internal "fire." They distract, numb, or fiercely defend you from feeling threatened.
Examples: Defensiveness, lashing out, binge eating, doom-scrolling, dissociation.
π Exiles
Wounded Inner Children: Sensitive parts carrying painful emotions (shame, loneliness, terror, heartbreak) from past trauma. Protectors work overtime to keep Exiles locked away so you don't re-experience that old pain.
Quick Summary of Your Inner System
| Role | What They Do | Common Examples |
|---|---|---|
| The Self | Leads with love, clarity, and calm | Curiosity, grounded feeling, self-compassion |
| Managers | Control environment proactively to prevent pain | Inner Critic, To-Do list driver, Perfectionist |
| Firefighters | React instantly to defend against, numb, or extinguish pain | Defensiveness, lashing out, binge eating, doom-scrolling |
| Exiles | Hold past wounds, shame, or fear | Feeling "not good enough," unloved, or afraid |
What to Expect in an IFS Session
In therapy, we won't try to "fix" or suppress any part of you. We will work at a pace that feels completely safe to you:
- Notice and Pause: We pay attention to how parts show up in your thoughts, emotions, or physical body (e.g., a tight chest, a defensive instinct, a heavy feeling).
- Unblend: We shift from saying "I am furious and defensive" to "A part of me is feeling defensive right now." This opens up space for your compassionate Self.
- Get Curious: We approach your parts with curiosity rather than judgment, asking what they are afraid would happen if they stopped doing their job.
- Heal & Unburden: Once Protectors trust us, they allow us to reach your Exiles to help them release old pain, leaving your whole system lighter and more balanced.
